Tips and information about web hosting
Before your website can be set-up you need a “host”, this is a company who “host” your website on the internet. Without getting too technical, you are basically renting space on a server (fancy computer) which is always connected to the internet to store your website files. In theory, you could do this yourself but it would be very expensive and technical, not to mention having to keep up with the latest technology to ensure your website is secure. As you are reading this I’ll assume you’re not in a position to go down that route.
This is the million-dollar question. For at least the last ten years I have used Just Host for my web hosting and have had no problems. I’ve found them very reliable, easy to manage and great value. Here’s a link to their site.
There are thousands of hosts out there, some more reputable than others. You want to look for one with high”uptime”, which is when the server is connected to the internet and people can access your website. You should also be aware that most cheaper packages will services where you are sharing server space with other customers and this can reduce your site’s loading time, which is not a good thing.
Which hosting package
The first thing you’ll need to choose is the level of service you require, if you’re only going to have a basic website then I would suggest a basic, low-cost package. You can always upgrade later if you need too but it might be harder to downgrade. If you’re going to have an online shop then a more advanced package may be required. Whichever package you decide to go for, make sure it supports WordPress.
Optional extras at checkout
Once you select a package and head to the checkout, various extras will probably be added to your purchase such as backup and search engine optimisation tools. Backups are recommended but search engine tools are unnecessary, as this can be done separately.
Also be aware that in many cases, the sales tax is only added to the total at the very last-minute so make sure that is budgeted for.
